Mission

The Sudan Radio Project aims to shift the lens through which the public understands and engages with the conflict in Darfur and Sudan as a whole. Our mission stems from our belief that careful analysis, truthful information, and direct, human communication have an extremely important role to play in the search for a lasting peace in Sudan. The Western mass media have, in many ways, oversimplified and sensationalized the conflict in Darfur, portraying it as a simple case of Arabs versus Africans, Khartoum versus Darfur, good versus evil. Grossly simplified moral divisions of this sort fail to acknowledge how the history of the country and the unique complexities of Sudanese identity play into in the conflict.

In order to alter the ways in which the public understands and engages with the conflict in Darfur, we incorporate the first-hand experiences of those living and working in the region. The focus of our stories ranges from the historical to the currently political, the social to the economic, the local to the global. We particularly strive to bring Sudanese voices into the discussion surrounding Darfur and Sudan more broadly–a discussion that has traditionally been dominated by Western activists. Above all, we seek to present listeners with a more meaningful analysis of the diverse facets of the situation in Darfur, the two civil wars that have taken place in Sudan, and other current and past conflicts in the country.

By providing a different framework within which the public can understand and engage with the conflict in Darfur, we hope that the Sudan Radio Project will help our listeners come to a deeper understanding of both the roots of the situation in Sudan today, and the possible ways forward. We envision, ultimately, an end to the violence in Darfur. We believe that education through informed, analytic, and inclusive reporting will be an important part of creating that peace.
